# Polkadot.js

This is a guide for installing the Polkadot.js browser extension, the wallet used to interact with Acala Apps and any parachain on Polkadot, similar to MetaMask on Ethereum.

## Intro to Polkadot.js - The Wallet for Polkadot & Polkadot Parachains

It's time to get you onboarded into the Polkadot ecosytem. Acala is a parachain connected to Polkadot for security and cross-chain ability. If you ever have questions, please ask in the Acala [Discord](https://www.acala.gg/).&#x20;

Polkadot.js is the primary option for a non-custodial wallet in the Polkadot ecosystem. Since Acala is a parachain built on Polkadot, the Polkadot.js extension is what you'll use to interact with Acala's DeFi applications. New to Acala and Polkadot? Here's an introductory [video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RexX1KJmTk).

Since Polkadot will scale up to have 100+ parachains connected to it Polkadot.js was configured a bit differently than you may be used to with single-chain wallets like MetaMask.

## Installing Polkadot.js

### Install the Browser Plugin

The browser plugin is available for both Google Chrome (and Chromium based browsers like Brave) and FireFox. **Download the plugin** [**here**](https://polkadot.js.org/extension/)**.**

This browser extension does one thing: it manages accounts and allows the signing of transactions with those accounts (like submitting a DeFi transaction on Acala). It does not perform wallet functions, like sending or receiving, or show you wallet balances. To perform wallet functions you can use Acala, or after setting up your Polkadot.js browser plugin, you can use the [Polkadot.js Apps](https://polkadot.js.org/apps/) website to check balances, participate in DOT staking, and more.

Once you install the Browser plugin, **be sure to pin it to your toolbar**:

![](/files/-MgDZBKEWgsaduD_9hyr)

### Create Account

1. Open the Polkadot{.js} browser extension by clicking the logo on the top bar of your browser. You will see a browser popup not unlike the one below:

![](/files/-MgDZEbxh7egQnjd7KCJ)

2\. Click the big plus button or select `Create new account` from the small plus icon in the top right. The Polkadot{.js} plugin will then use system randomness to make a new seed for you and display it to you in the form of twelve words.

![](/files/-MgDZI9FlWoPTjKSQgTt)

3\. You should back up these words as [explained here](https://wiki.polkadot.network/docs/en/learn-account-generation#storing-your-key-safely) on the Polkadot wiki. It is imperative to store the seed somewhere safe, secret, and secure. If you cannot access your account via Polkadot.js for some reason, you can re-enter your seed through the `Add account menu` by selecting `Import account from pre-existing seed`.

### Set Account Name & Password

1. The account name is arbitrary and for your use only. The password will be used to encrypt this account's information. You will need to re-enter it when using the account for any kind of outgoing transaction or when using it to sign a message.
2. Note that this password does NOT protect your seed phrase. If someone knows the twelve words in your mnemonic seed, they still have control over your account even if they do not know the password.&#x20;

{% hint style="danger" %}
Do not ever share your seed phrase or password.
{% endhint %}

3\. Keep "Network" as "Allow use on any chain".

![](/files/-MgDXpbYnbGIbNXN115R)

### Convert Address for different chain formats

If you ever wanted to see what an account format looks like for different networks within the Polkadot ecosystem, you can use the [Subscan Address Transform tool](https://polkadot.subscan.io/tools/ss58_transform) to convert your address between the different chain formats.

Enter any address in the input box on the left-hand side, then click **`Transform`** button, you can see address formats for all chains on the right-hand side.

# Address Binding

What is address binding? Learn how to bind your Substrate account to your own EVM account.

## Background

EVM+ is live on Acala and Karura and EVM wallet is required to access its feature - such as transferring ERC20 tokens. Acala's EVM+ has built in feature to auto-generate and auto-bind an EVM address to the Substrate (Polkadot) address when needed, so it is seamless for users to use EVM features. As there is no private key for the auto-generated account, this account can only be accessed through Polkadot address on supported Dapps such as Acala/Karura.

For users with existing EVM account and want to bind this account to the Polkadot address instead, this document describes the process for user to bind their own EVM account.

## Video

{% embed url="<https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=261s&v=wG9NBydbM6Y>" %}

## Pre-Requisites

* MetaMask and Substrate Wallets, Substrate wallet not bound to any account.
* ACA in your Substrate Wallet and other tokens in your MetaMask wallet to pay for transaction fees.&#x20;

You can learn how to create a Substrate wallet by following any of these [guides](https://wiki.acala.network/get-started/acala-network/acala-account). You can learn how to send ACA to your Acala wallet by following this [guide. ](https://wiki.acala.network/integrate/integration/token-transfer)

You can learn how to create a MetaMask wallet by following this [guide](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNPz-Dv5BjM).

## Address Binding

**Note there are a few restrictions of the bind feature by design:**

* **Binds can only be done between one Substrate and one MetaMask account**
* **Neither account can be previously bound to another account. Additionally, binding is final - there is no unbind feature.**

1\) Go to [Bind MetaMask](https://apps.acala.network/bridge/bind-address) in the Acala app. Click `Connect to MetaMask` and select the account you'd like to connect. Do the same thing for your Substrate account.&#x20;

![](/files/2Vu9NP0sy2P3H1YQp9eG)

2\) **Double check that you are binding the correct accounts because this action cannot be undone.** Click `Sign`.

If you are having trouble connecting your MetMask, you can either add it via [Acala](https://chainlist.org/chain/787) and [Karura](https://chainlist.org/chain/686) on ChainList, or manually add the Acala network by opening your MetaMask wallet and going to Settings-> Networks -> Add Networks and entering the following information:\
\
**Network Name:** Acala

**New RPC URL**`https://eth-rpc-acala.aca-api.network/`

**Chain ID:** 787

**Currency Symbol:** ACA

**Block Explorer URL**`https://blockscout.acala.network/`&#x20;

![](/files/Xy2NuEKuECvIoWdTlHIe)

\
3\) Click `Bind`. Remember that in order to bind, you must have `ACA` in your Substrate account. You can learn how to send ACA to your Acala wallet by following this [guide.](https://wiki.acala.network/integrate/integration/token-transfer)

![](/files/5D8G3zc86JwF0HP1AO9X)

4\) You should now see that your accounts have been successfully bound!

![](/files/sM00yowFsHrMDvMQqo6x)

## FAQ

#### Can I unbind and bind to a new account?

No. Once you bind two accounts together, you cannot unbind them. If you you'd like to use a different Polkadot account or a different Ethereum account, you'll need to create two new wallets.

**Do I need to keep both seed phrases?**

Yes. Please keep both seed phrases. If you ever need to recover all of your funds, you will need both sets of seed phrases.

**Where can I see the MetaMask address linked to my account?**

If you've already completed the binding process, click on your account in the upper right hand corner and then hover over the chain icon to see the linked MetaMask address.

#### What are the differences between auto-generated EVM address and binding my own EVM address?

There is no difference when you are using it within Acala/Karura, but binding your own EVM address gives you additional flexibility in interacting with your account using your EVM wallet such as MetaMask.

# FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about Acala Swap

## Adding New Trading Pairs

### **How are new tokens listed on Acala Swap?**

Each new trading pair listing must be approved through a governance vote.

### **Do all new trading pairs go through the bootstrapping process?**

The Bootstrap process is optional.

## Liquidity Providing (LPing)

### **What do I get for being a liquidity provider (LP)?**

**All LPs:** Earn your proportion of the trading fees for the trading pair that you provide liquidity to. Every trade is subject to a 0.30% fee.

**Certain pools:** Earn liquidity mining rewards (in ACA) from occasional Liquidity Programs. Go to the Liquidity Mining section below to learn more.

🚨You can read more about LP Returns & Risks [here](https://docs.acalaswap.app/overview/liquidity-pools#impermanent-loss).

### **What tokens are the trading fees that I earn paid in?**

Your trading fees will be paid in the same two coins that you provide liquidity to. The ratio of these tokens reflects the ratio in the pool.

### Why can't I see the trading fees I'm earning?

The trading fees you earn are added back to the liquidity you are providing. You'll receive your fees once you redeem your LP tokens.

### 🚨**What are the risks with adding to an LP pool?**

There are various risks of being a liquidity provider especially when there are significant fluctuations in the underlying asset exchange rates, which may result in **LPs being worse off than simply holding the tokens**. You can read more about LP risks [here](https://docs.acalaswap.app/overview/liquidity-pools#impermanent-loss) and also learn more by watching this [video](https://youtu.be/iUC_OOnAR5U).

### **Why can’t I provide liquidity?**

You must provide liquidity as a pair. The only time you can provide single-sided liquidity is during the bootstrapping period.

### Why did I receive a different amount and balance of tokens than when I put in?

The tokens that you receive after withdrawing your liquidity from the LP pool reflect the ratio of the tokens in the pool when you withdraw, not when you contributed. You can learn more about how Acala Swap works by watching this [video](https://youtu.be/iUC_OOnAR5U).&#x20;

## Liquidity Mining

### **Is there a liquidity mining program?**

Liquidity mining will be used to incentivize certain trading pairs.&#x20;

### **What does it mean to stake my LP tokens?**

When you stake your LP tokens, you are locking them on the Acala platform. Users stake their LP tokens to earn liquidity mining rewards. Users can unstake their LP tokens at any time, but they will no longer earn liquidity mining rewards.

### **Do I have to stake my LP tokens to earn liquidity mining rewards?**

Yes.

### **What happens if I don’t stake my LP tokens?**

If you don’t stake your LP tokens, you will only be earning your proportion of the trading fees for the pair you provide liquidity to. **You will not earn any liquidity mining rewards.**

### How does claiming my ACA rewards work?

ACA rewards are accumulated over time and LPs can claim these rewards at any time. However, if LPs keep the rewards in the pool until the end of the program, they'll be eligible for a Loyalty Bonus paid in ACA. **Users can also remove their LP tokens and still be eligible for the Loyalty Bonus as long as they don't claim their ACA rewards.**

### Can I claim my LP tokens and still earn the Loyalty Bonus?

Users can remove their LP tokens and still be eligible for the Loyalty Bonus as long as they don't claim their ACA rewards.

## Liquidity Bootstrapping

### Do I have to participate in the bootstrap to earn ACA liquidity mining rewards?

No. You can provide liquidity after the bootstrapping and still earn ACA liquidity mining rewards as long as you stake your LP tokens.

### Are there additional incentives for users that participate in bootstrapping?

No. However, users that participate in bootstrapping are the pioneers that enable a new trading pair for the entire protocol, so you have that going for you, which is nice.

### 🚨 What happens if I provide only one token as liquidity during the bootstrapping period?

If you are contributing to only one side of the pool (say Token A), **you are effectively converting 50% of Token A into Token B** based on the exchange rate when the Bootstrap ends (and the pool opens for trading). You can learn more by following this [bootstrap simulation](https://docs.acalaswap.app/overview/bootstrap-program#simulation-during-bootstrap).

### **Do I need to claim my LP tokens?**

Yes. Please claim your LP tokens. If you would like to earn liquidity mining rewards, you will also need to stake your LP tokens on the Earn tab.

### Can I provide liquidity after the liquidity targets are met?

Yes.

### Can I provide liquidity after the bootstrapping period ends?

Yes. Once the token pair launches for trading, you can provide liquidity. However, you will not be able to provide single-sided liquidity. You must provide liquidity in token pairs.

### Can I withdraw my liquidity during the bootstrapping period?

No. You will have to wait until the trading pair is live to withdraw your liquidity.

### Can I provide liquidity multiple times throughout the bootstrap period?

Yes.

# FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about Vaults

## Risks

### 🚨What are the risks of minting aUSD?

Creating a Vault involves using your collateral to mint aUSD. If the Current Price of your collateral falls to or below the Liquidation Price, your assets will be sold to repay the aUSD debit, accumulated Stability Fee and the Liquidation Fee.&#x20;

### 🚨Are Vaults free to use?

Vaults are not free to use and come with inherent risks. Generating aUSD requires you to pay the Stability Fee. The Stability Fee is a variable rate and is subject to change. To claim your collateral, you must repay the previously generated aUSD and the accumulated Stability Fee.

### How can I reduce my risk?

You can learn more on how to reduce your risk by going [here](https://docs.acaladollar.app/overview/assessing-loan-risks).

## Key Parameters

### What is the Liquidation Price?

The price at which the Vault becomes vulnerable to liquidation. If the Current Price falls to or below this amount, the Vault will be deemed unsafe, and the collateral will then be liquidated (sold) in exchange for aUSD to pay back the vault.

### What is the Liquidation Ratio?

The collateral-to-aUSD ratio at which the Vault becomes vulnerable to liquidation. If the Current Ratio falls to or below this amount, the Vault will be deemed unsafe, and the collateral will then be liquidated (sold) in exchange for aUSD to pay back the vault.

### What is the Stability Fee?

The fee for minting aUSD. This fee is usually displayed as an annualized rate for indicative purpose only. In reality, it is calculated each block and added to your existing aUSD debit. To close a aUSD vault, you will need to pay back the aUSD minted as well as stability fees accrued.&#x20;

### What is the Liquidation Fee?

If a liquidation occurs, you are required to pay this penalty. The Liquidation Penalty is a disincentive for users to leave a position in danger and acts as an additional safeguard for the stability of aUSD.

### What is the Required Collateral Ratio?

The collateral-to-aUSD ratio that must be met in order to mint aUSD.

### What is the Current Ratio?

Your current collateral-to-aUSD ratio.

## Liquidation

### What happens if I get liquidated?

If you get liquidated, the tokens you locked as collateral will be sold to pay the aUSD balance you owe, the accumulated stability fee and the liquidation penalty. If there is any excess crypto leftover, that will be returned to you.

### Will I be alerted before my Vault is Liquidated?

No. Ensuring that the assets in your Vault remain safe from Liquidation is entirely your responsibility.

### How do I lower my Liquidation Price/Ratio?

If your Vault is close to the Liquidation Price/Ratio, you may either add more collateral or pay aUSD back into their Vault.

If choosing between adding collateral or paying back aUSD, paying back aUSD will increase your collateralization ratio more than contributing an equivalent USD amount of collateral.

## Withdrawing Collateral

### How do I get my collateral back?

You can get your collateral back buy paying back your aUSD and accrued Stability Fee. Once that is done, you can withdraw your collateral.

# Staking

## FAQ

#### What is LDOT?

LDOT is a token backed by staked DOT. When you stake your DOT on Acala, you receive the LDOT token as a receipt. This LDOT earns staking rewards. You can hold it and accrue staking rewards (just like staking), or use it in DeFi apps to boost your earnings (but can incur additional risks). The choice is up to you.

#### What are the risks of LDOT?

Users are subject to slash risk. This means if the validators staking the DOT misbehave, a portion of your tokens could be taken away as penalty. This risk is also present when you stake on the Polkadot Relay Chain and may also exist if you stake on an exchange (depending on your exchange's rules).

#### What are the risks of staking LDOT?

The risk is the same if you hold LDOT or if you stake LDOT.

#### How long does it take to unstake my DOT?

You can pay a 1% fee to unstake your DOT instantly or you can pay a smaller fee to wait the 28 day unbonding period.

# ACA Staking

### What you get

* ACA reward
* Ecosystem token contributions are farmable via staked ACA
* Vote for emission distribution to liquidity pools and dApps
* Loyalty bonus captured from unstaking
* Staked ACA can still participate in governance voting

## Step-by-step ACA staking

1\) Before you stake, you will need to have created a wallet and transferred your ACA to that wallet.&#x20;

* Learn how to create a wallet [here](https://guide.acalaapps.wiki/general/wallet-setup).
* Learn how to transfer your ACA to your wallet [here](https://guide.acalaapps.wiki/general/bringing-tokens-to-karura/sending-and-receiving-aca).

2\) Connect to [Acala Apps](https://apps.acala.network/). Click on `Staking` on the left-hand navigation menu.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/lpKDiBRWZ7oWf3GwiPaP" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

3\) Enter the amount of ACA you'd like to stake and then click `Stake`.&#x20;

**Note: i. that unstaking will take 28 days, see** [**Unstaking**](#unstaking) **section below. ii. Keep in mind that you will need to pay transaction fees to unstake and that you won't be able to use your staked ACA to pay those transaction fees. i.e. You may not want to stake MAX ACA and keep some small amount as fees.**

5\) The amount of ACA you staked will appear as Staked. You will also be able to track your ACA rewards and claim those rewards, if desired.\
\
**Note that ACA rewards are subject to a Loyalty Bonus to be taken away from your rewards. You can unstake your ACA and still earn your Loyalty Bonus, but claiming the rewards will deduct to Loyalty Bonus. See** [**Loyalty Bonus**](#loyalty-bonus) **below.**

6\) Users can claim their ACA rewards by clicking `Claim`. Users can also withdraw their staked ACA by clicking `Deposit Withdraw` and then entering the amount they'd like to withdraw.

## Unstaking

Unstaking period - Unstaking takes approximately 14 days, or 100,800 blocks from the unstaking request is submitted. Note the ACA unstaking will not earn yield in the unstaking period.

Unstaking queue - as there is a 14 days unstaking period before the ACA is unstaked and ready for claim, multiple unstaking transaction will each have their timeline, so there is an unstaking queue.

Restaking - should you want to put the ACA back to staking status, you can use restake anytime to restake any amount that is currently unstaking, the ACA will be in staked status and start earning yield immediately.

## Rewards claiming

Click on the claim button to review your rewards, breakdown in the popup, there is ACA rewards, and project token rewards section. Click claim button at the review page to execute the claim and contribute to the loyalty bonus pool - more about loyalty bonus in the next section.

<figure><img src="/files/rtDXsOuMzSEaDXym2T5l" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

## Loyalty Bonus

Loyalty Bonus in ACA staking is setup to provide incentive for users claim their rewards, where every claim will result in a percentage % of the amount claimed distributed to the rest of the stake participants proportionally as Loyalty Bonus.

i.e. there will be a positive (from other claims rewards before you) and a negative loyalty bonus for all users, user claims later may have a net positive rewards.

## ACA Staking with Ledger Account

Currently the only way to participate on ACA Staking with Ledger account is by setting up a proxy account and use this proxy account to sign and submit transaction with Polkadot.js web wallet.

## FAQs

**Can I unstake my ACA at any time?**

Yes. Users can unstake their ACA at any time. However, all unstake subject to unstaking period - see [Unstaking](#unstaking) above.

# ACA Staking via Ledger

### Table of contents

* [How it works](#how-it-works)
* [Adding proxy](#adding-proxy)
* [Removing proxy](#removing-proxy)
* [ACA Staking on Ledger with a proxy account](#aca-staking-on-ledger-with-proxy-account)
* [Check staked ACA balance](#check-staked-aca-balance)

### How it works

The Acala Ledger App version is currently behind the Acala runtime, therefore features like staking are not yet supported directly via Ledger. Here is a workaround for Ledger users to participate in ACA staking before the new Ledger version is released (which could take a while based on past auditing timeframe). Ledger users could set up a proxy account and use this proxy account to sign and submit transactions with the Polkadot-JS web wallet.

### Adding proxy

Follow the instructions [here](https://support.polkadot.network/support/solutions/articles/65000182179-how-to-create-a-proxy-account#:~:text=Setting%20Proxies\&text=To%20set%20up%20a%20proxy,%2C%20select%20%22Add%20proxy%22.) to create a proxy for your ledger account. Our dApp will support proxy account signing in future releases. In the meantime, ACA staking can be done via the Polkadot-JS UI. Bear in mind that your account that is acting as the proxy should have some ACA to pay for fees when signing transactions. For transferring ACA, see the documentation [here](/general/bringing-tokens-to-karura/sending-and-receiving-aca).

### Removing proxy

Follow the instructions [here](https://support.polkadot.network/support/solutions/articles/65000182179-how-to-create-a-proxy-account#Removing-Proxies) to clear proxies on Polkadot-JS UI.

### ACA Staking on Ledger with a proxy account

1. Navigate to [Polkadot-JS UI](https://polkadot.js.org/), select Acala network and go to Developer -> Extrinsics -> Submission
2. Select the **`Ledger account`**, select `earning`, `bond(amount)`
3. Input `amount` in ACA with 12 trailing 0s, e.g. 10,000,000,000,000 = 10 ACA, 100,500,000,000,000 = 100.5 ACA
4. Click `Submit Transaction`

<figure><img src="/files/99ztH7npTDlMuPwghslz" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

5. In the next screen, you are prompted to confirm using the proxy account to sign

<figure><img src="/files/jvMvwENBlgJrlBlzD0l3" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

6. Sign accordingly.

<figure><img src="/files/x7p3Ikg4FrPnnhcA7rP9" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

7. Stake completed&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/JAwANhXBkprdYAMjn797" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Check staked ACA balance

To get the staked ACA amount, you can go to Acala dApp, connect with Ledger account, and view the Staked amount.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/tKXmky9hMO8No7BjmU3p" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Or follow the steps below to view on Polkadot-JS:

1. Go to [Polkadot-JS UI](https://polkadot.js.org/), select Acala network and go to Developer -> Chain state -> Storage
2. Select `earning` -> `ledger`
3. Select your Ledger account and click + button on the right

<figure><img src="/files/UbRRm8rUiNWbrdu4aJg7" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

4. Note the number behind `active` take out 12 decimals and it will be the ACA staked. i.e. 643,275,532,299,100 = 643.275... ACA staked.
